When Should You Buy A New Mattress?

With the average New Zealander spending a third of their lives asleep, keeping your mattress in good condition should be at the top of your priority list.

But, of course, life gets in the way - and while you may have forgotten how long you’ve been sleeping on your current mattress, chances are you might be missing some of the key signs telling you to upgrade your bed.

If anything we’ve listed below applies to you, this is your friendly reminder to consider buying a new mattress!

Here Are Few Signs To Buy a New Mattress

Your mattress is over eight years old

While Brownies mattresses have a lifespan of up to ten years, wear and tear will start to set in around the eight-year mark. Factors like your sleeping style, whether you sleep with a partner, and how you care for your mattress will all play a role in its lifespan.

A good thing to ask yourself is whether you’re sleeping better or worse than you were a year ago. If the answer’s worse, then it’s time to stop by your local Brownies Mattress Direct and chat to our sleep experts about a new mattress.

Your mattress resembles a hammock

While hammocks may be the top of your list for a holiday, chances are it’s not your preference for your nightly sleep surface.

“Hammock effect” describes the sagging of mattresses which occurs over time. As the materials inside your mattress gradually break down, it loses its support and sags underneath your body weight.

Flipping your mattress can help prolong the effect, but if your bed is giving you hammock vibes no matter what you do - it’s time to say bon voyage.

You’re waking up feeling sore

Back pain and mattresses tend to go hand in hand. While chronic back pain may require a special sleeping surface, if your pain tends to subside once you’ve gotten up and started moving around, it could just be that your current mattress is in need of an upgrade.

Your sleeping situation has changed

That mattress you first got during uni may have served you well back then, but if you’ve since added an extra sleeper to your bed, it may no longer give you the support you need (and maybe behind a partner keeping you up at night). A second body will wear down your mattress faster than sleeping alone.

Test out new mattress options with your partner to make sure your new investment will keep everyone sleeping soundly.
